What is distance learning?

Distance learning involves studying a course without having to attend classes in person at a school, college or university.

Once strongly associated with mature students, in recent years distance learning has become an extremely popular learning method among all age groups above secondary level.

The ability to learn remotely gives hundreds of thousands of people across the UK and worldwide the opportunity to continue their education where they may not otherwise get the chance.

Flexibility is one of the key advantages of distance learning; the ability to choose the hours and location of study is a bonus for most people, allowing them to fit their education around work or family life, or any other commitments they may have.

The internet is largely to thank for the increase in people enrolling onto distance learning programmes. With the huge amount of written resources available at the touch of a button, as well as the ability to access video content and virtually connect with tutors, mentors and fellow students, distance learning needn’t be so different from attending classes on campus these days – what’s more, the qualification you receive at the end is the same!

There are more benefits to distance learning than just flexible hours and location. Here are a few:

  • You can gain a degree from anywhere in the world, not just the country in which you reside.
  • Studying at a pace that suits you will allow you to revisit anything you feel you haven’t fully understood.
  • You may save money if you opt for a distance learning course rather than an on-campus one, as fees are usually lower.
  • Having to manage your own schedule will help you acquire vital life skills such as time management and organisation.

Why is it so popular?

In today’s busy world you cannot always adjust your schedule to pursue a full time education. Online learning enables you to study for an internationally recognised qualification without putting your life on hold. Whether you are a busy professional looking for the next career step or a school leaver wanting to start your career without sacrificing your education, online study may be the solution you need. Over 50,000 people worldwide have studied and achieved their qualifications through online and distance learning with us.

The only difference between a qualification from Arden University and a traditional campus uni is the flexible way we deliver the course. With 24/7, multi-device, multi-media learning materials and a leading edge ‘virtual classroom’ study portal, you can study from any place in the world at any time, as long as you can access the internet.

How does online learning work?

There is no campus, no fixed timetable and your study portal is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! The qualification at the end is the same as any other UK university course. Do I need a computer?

You will need to be online for all of our courses, and there are specific software requirements for some of them. You can connect to ilearn (our online learning classroom) through many different devices such as mobile phones, tablets and laptops, or your local library may have resources you can use.

What study materials do I get?

Your learning materials are developed by subject specialists and have been developed with your future career in mind – so you don't just get the theory to help you pass your exams, but also real-life, practical examples to make things easier to understand and to help you later thrive in the workplace.
